What age do kids start dance classes?
We welcome dancers from as young as 18 months through to adults. Our Creative Dance and Tiny Tots programs are designed for toddlers and preschoolers, while our recreational and competitive programs serve kids, teens, and adults of all levels.
Do I need prior dance experience to enroll?
Not at all. We have beginner-friendly classes at every level and age group. Our instructors are experienced at welcoming first-time dancers and making them feel comfortable from day one.

You can register online through our booking portal at jdansestudio.com, call us at (416) 830-5601, or email jdansestudio@gmail.com. We’re happy to help you find the right class.
Can I visit the studio before enrolling?
Absolutely. Contact us to schedule a tour or book a free trial class so you can see the studio and meet our team before committing.
Are trial classes led by the regular instructor?
Yes. We aim to match new dancers with the instructor they’ll have on a regular basis, so the trial class experience reflects what ongoing classes look like.
When does the dance season run? Do you offer summer classes?
Our main dance season runs from September through June, following a similar calendar to the school year. We also offer summer programs and intensives for dancers who want to keep training or try dance for the first time during the warmer months. Check our schedule page or contact us for current summer program availability.
What is the difference between recreational and competitive dance?
Recreational dance is designed for students who want to learn, grow, and perform in a fun, low-pressure environment. Students attend weekly classes and perform in our end-of-season recital. Competitive dance is for dedicated dancers who want to train at a higher level and represent J’Danse Studio at regional and national competitions. Competitive students train more frequently, work toward polished routines, and are placed by invitation or assessment. Both programs share the same qualified instructors and high teaching standards — the difference is intensity and commitment level.

Our Instructors
Are your teachers professionally trained?
Yes. All of our instructors are professionally trained, and many hold certifications in their specific disciplines — including our Acrobatic Arts certified instructors. Visit our Instructors page to meet the full team.
Are your instructors experienced with young children?
Absolutely. Many of our teachers specialize in early childhood dance education, including toddler and preschool classes. They know how to engage, encourage, and develop young movers in a safe, nurturing environment.
Do instructors teach both recreational and competitive students?
Yes. Many of our instructors work across both the recreational and competitive programs, bringing the same high standard of technique and professionalism to every class.
Do you have assistant teachers in class?
Yes, some classes include trained dance assistants — particularly in younger age groups — to help maintain structure, safety, and individual attention throughout the session.
Dress Code & What to Wear
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Proper dancewear and appropriate footwear are required for all classes. This ensures safety, freedom of movement, and the ability for instructors to observe alignment and technique. New students have a 3-week grace period — during this time, fitted activewear is perfectly acceptable.
Where can I find the full dress code details?
Visit our Dress Code page for complete attire requirements broken down by class style and age group.
Do adults follow the same dress code?
Yes. Adult dancers follow the same style-specific guidelines as younger students. See the Dress Code page for details on what to wear for each class type.
What if we can't find the exact attire right away?
No problem. We offer a 3-week grace period for all new students. During that time, fitted activewear such as leggings and a fitted top is perfectly acceptable while you source the proper dancewear.
Do pointe shoes need instructor approval?
Yes. Students must complete a pointe readiness assessment with their instructor before beginning pointe work. Pointe shoes must also be professionally fitted — purchasing online without a proper fitting is strongly discouraged and can cause injury.
Can students dance barefoot in class?
Some styles such as acro and certain jazz classes may allow bare feet depending on the class level. Your instructor will advise you during or before the first class.
Is the dress code the same for recreational and competitive dancers?
Recreational and competitive students follow the same base dress code by style. Competitive dancers may have additional costume or uniform requirements for performances and competitions, which are communicated separately by the competitive team coordinator.
