Discover the Joy of Jazz Dance at Every Age

Jazz dance classes in Toronto at J’Danse Studio are one of the most popular programs we offer — and one of the most versatile starting points for young dancers of any age or experience level. Based in Scarborough and serving the Greater Toronto Area since 2010, our jazz program runs from Mini Jazz for ages 4 to 5 through to competitive-level elite jazz training for advanced teen dancers. Jazz builds rhythm, flexibility, coordination, and stage presence simultaneously — making it one of the most effective single styles for developing a well-rounded performer. Classes stay small, technique is progressive, and a free trial class is available for every new student.

What Is Jazz Dance

Jazz dance is a high-energy performance style rooted in Broadway and commercial dance traditions. It combines structured technique — turns, leaps, extensions, and footwork combinations — with expressive performance quality and sharp musicality. Unlike classical styles, jazz encourages individuality within technique: students develop a personal performance presence alongside the foundational skills that make them versatile, capable performers across multiple styles.

Jazz technique transfers directly to musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop. Many of J’Danse Studio’s strongest competitive dancers cite jazz training as the single most important contributor to their performance quality and stage confidence.

Kids Mini Jazz (Ages 4–5)

(Beginner)

High-energy rhythm-based classes covering basic jazz isolations, simple combinations, and performance energy in an age-appropriate, play-based format. Mini Jazz suits children who are naturally expressive and love moving to music. The style develops coordination, rhythmic awareness, and physical confidence quickly — and children who complete Mini Jazz arrive in Kids Jazz already moving like dancers.

Kids Jazz – Jazz 1/2 (Ages 5–10)

(Beginner to Intermediate)

Structured jazz technique for children in the recreational program. Students develop proper jazz vocabulary — isolations, turns, leaps, across-the-floor combinations — in a focused, encouraging class environment. Kids Jazz is divided into experience-appropriate levels so beginners and returning students are always in a class that challenges them at the right pace.

Teen Jazz – Jazz 3/4 & Jazz 4 (Ages 10–14)

(Beginner & Experienced Welcome)

Advanced jazz technique for teenagers ready for performance-level training. Classes cover sharp movements, complex combination work, performance skills, and the teamwork that competitive and showcase performance demands. Teen Jazz students develop the technical foundation and stage presence needed for strong jazz performance across recreational and competitive contexts.

Elite Jazz (Ages 14–18)

(By Instructor Permission)

The highest recreational jazz level at J’Danse Studio. Advanced choreography, stage preparation, and precision technique for experienced teen dancers ready for the most challenging material in the recreational program. Placement by instructor assessment. Students in Jazz Elite are typically preparing for competitive pathways or professional dance training.

Competitive Jazz — Team JDS

(By Invitation or Audition)

Competitive jazz for Team JDS involves original choreography, advanced performance preparation, and adjudicated competitions across Ontario. Placement by audition or instructor recommendation. Contact J’Danse Studio to express interest and be notified of the next audition cycle.
