What Is Team JDS? Inside J’Danse Studio’s Competitive Dance Program in Toronto

Team JDS competitive dancers at J'Danse Studio in Scarborough Toronto Ontario

If you have been looking into competitive dance programs in Toronto and the Scarborough area, you have likely come across Team JDS. It is J’Danse Studio’s competitive arm — and for families ready to commit to a higher level of training, it is one of the most structured, supportive competitive programs available in the east GTA.

The short answer: Team JDS is a multi-stream competitive dance program for dancers aged 3 and up. It runs three levels — Pre-Competitive, Part-Time Competitive, and Elite Full-Time Competitive — each designed around a different level of commitment and a different stage of a dancer’s development. Placement is by audition or instructor recommendation.

This post covers what the program actually involves, who it suits, and what families should know before pursuing an audition.

What Is Team JDS?

Team JDS is the competitive dance program at J’Danse Studio in Scarborough, Ontario. Founded alongside the studio in 2010, Team JDS has spent 15 seasons building competitive dancers who perform and place at regional and national events across Ontario.

Unlike large multi-location competitive programs, Team JDS is a boutique competitive team. Class sizes remain small — the same 6 to 10 student cap that applies to J’Danse’s recreational program. This means every competitive dancer receives individual attention and genuine coaching, not just a space in a large studio’s competitive roster.

The Three Competitive Streams

Level 1 — Pre-Competitive (Ages 3 to 7) Designed for younger dancers who are ready to explore what competition looks like. Training is structured but age-appropriate, focusing on technique foundations, stage presence, and group routines. Pre-competitive dancers perform at selected events rather than a full competition season, making the commitment level manageable for younger children and their families.

Level 2 — Part-Time Competitive (Ages 7 and up) A flexible schedule for dancers who want competition experience without full-time commitment. Ideal for school-age dancers balancing other activities, with moderate weekly training hours — typically 3 to 4 days per week — and participation in select regional competition events. This stream suits dancers who are serious about improvement without making dance the only significant activity in their schedule.

Level 3 — Elite Full-Time Competitive The most intensive stream at J’Danse Studio. Designed for dancers committed to high-level training, advanced choreography, and a full competition season including solos, duets, trios, and group routines at regional and national events across Ontario. This level requires 4 to 5 training days per week depending on the season. Placement by audition or director recommendation only.

What Competitive Training Actually Involves

Many parents imagine competitive dance as primarily rehearsal. In practice, the Team JDS training schedule is more comprehensive than that.

Multi-discipline training. All competitive dancers train across multiple styles — not just their competition styles. This typically includes Ballet and technique foundations, Stretch and Strength (SNS), Jumps and Turns, and their specific competitive styles. Acrobatic Arts certified training is available through Ms Katherine, Ms Sarah, and Mrs Janie for dancers whose competitive routines include acro elements.

Guest instructors and choreographers. Team JDS regularly brings in professional guest artists to work with competitive dancers. This gives students exposure to working with new coaches, fresh choreographic perspectives, and the experience of adapting quickly to different teaching styles — a skill that matters significantly at high-level competition.

Performance preparation. Every competitive dancer performs at J’Danse Studio’s annual showcase in addition to their competition season. The showcase is a full production — lighting, staging, costumes, audience — and serves as high-quality performance preparation.

Parent communication. Competitive schedules, competition dates, costume information, and season updates are communicated consistently throughout the year. Competitive dance is a family commitment, and J’Danse Studio treats it that way.

What Competitions Does Team JDS Attend?

Team JDS competes at regional and national dance competitions across Ontario throughout the season. Specific competition events are communicated to families at the start of each competitive year. The program has produced placements at competitions across the GTA and beyond over its 15 seasons.

Is Competitive Dance Right for Your Child?

The most consistent indicator of competitive readiness is intrinsic motivation — children who talk about dance constantly, practice at home without being asked, and express a genuine desire to perform for an audience. The second indicator is emotional resilience: competitive dance involves detailed feedback, high expectations, and the experience of being adjudicated. Children who respond to correction by trying harder rather than shutting down tend to thrive.

Competitive dance is not right for every child, and that is completely fine. J’Danse Studio’s recreational program offers just as much growth, joy, and performance opportunity through the annual showcase. Many of Team JDS’s strongest competitive dancers spent one or more seasons in the recreational program before transitioning — and none of that time was wasted.
