How to Prepare for Your Child’s First Dance Class — A J’Danse Studio Parent Guide

Your child’s first dance class in Toronto is one of those days parents remember for years. And like most milestone moments, the excitement is real — and so is the anxiety. Did you pack the right shoes? Will they cry when you leave? What actually happens in there?

The short answer: the first dance class is almost always better than the parent feared and exactly as good as the child hoped. That said, a little preparation makes a genuine difference — for the child’s comfort, the parent’s peace of mind, and the instructor’s ability to do their best work from day one.

At J’Danse Studio in Scarborough, we have welcomed first-time dancers through our doors for over 15 seasons. This is everything we know about making that first class go well.

Step 1 — Sort the Attire First, But Do Not Stress It

Attire is the number one source of pre-class anxiety for new parents — and the most important thing to know is this: you have three weeks. J’Danse Studio offers a 3-week grace period for all new students. During that time, fitted activewear is completely acceptable while you source the proper dancewear.

For your child’s very first class, clean, fitted athletic wear and any non-marking sneaker or soft shoe is fine. No one will turn your child away. No one will make them feel out of place.

That said, if you want to arrive with the correct attire from day one, the full dress code breaks down exactly what each style requires by age group. For most children’s first classes at J’Danse the basics are:

  • Ballet and most recreational classes: Black leotard, light tan tights, ballet pink slippers
  • Hip Hop: Athletic wear and White Nike Air Force 1 shoes
  • Creative Dance and Mini classes: Black leotard or fitted activewear, appropriate shoes per style

Our Dancewear Centre partner link carries everything required, delivered quickly with the studio’s specific items pre-selected. If you are in a time crunch, contact us and we will point you to the fastest option.

Step 2 — Do the Hair Before You Leave Home

Hair causes more first-class delays than anything else. Arriving at the studio and realising a bun still needs to go up with no hairpins available is a stressful way to start the experience for everyone.

For all J’Danse classes, hair must be pulled back in a secure bun with bobby pins, off the face. A hair net is optional but helpful for keeping the bun intact through a full class. Set aside five extra minutes before you leave home and handle it there — not in the car park.

Step 3 — Arrive 10 Minutes Early

The single most effective thing a parent can do for a first class is arrive early. Ten minutes is enough. It gives your child time to:

  • See the studio environment before the class begins
  • Meet the instructor without the pressure of starting immediately
  • Watch other children arrive so the room does not feel unfamiliar when it fills up
  • Use the washroom and get shoes on without rushing

In contrast, arriving exactly on time — or late — means entering an environment that is already in motion. For children who are naturally anxious about new situations, that transition is harder. A calm, unhurried arrival sets the tone for the entire class.

J’Danse Studio is located at 2105 Midland Ave, Unit 2, Scarborough, with free on-site parking. There are no parking delays to plan around. If you are coming by TTC or from the 401, find us here.

Step 4 — Talk to Your Child About What Will Happen

Children who know what to expect before they arrive handle transitions significantly better than those who walk in without context. You do not need to give a lecture. A simple, accurate, positive description is enough.

Something like: “You are going to a dance class today. There will be music and movement games. Your teacher is Miss [Name] and there will be other children your age. I will be right outside the whole time.”

Three things matter in that description:
Music — children are rarely anxious about music. It is a natural motivator.
Other children — normalises the group environment before they see it.
You will be right outside — addresses the single most common first-class fear directly.

According to The Hospital for Sick Children’s AboutKidsHealth, children manage new social environments better when they have accurate, simple advance information about what to expect. The preparation does not need to be extensive — it needs to be honest and calm.

Step 5 — Know the Drop-Off Policy Before You Arrive

Studios handle parent presence differently depending on the class age and level. At J’Danse Studio:

Creative Dance (Ages 2–3): Contact us before the first class to confirm the current policy for your specific session. Some toddler classes involve parent participation, others are structured as independent classes. We will tell you exactly what to expect.

Mini Classes and above (Ages 4+): Parents generally wait in the designated waiting area outside the studio floor. This is intentional — children focus better and develop independence faster when the class is a space that belongs to them. Instructors at J’Danse are experienced with first-class transitions and know how to guide children in gently.

If your child is anxious, speak to the instructor before the class begins. A good instructor — and all of J’Danse Studio’s team are experienced with first-timers — will acknowledge your child directly and make the transition feel natural.

Step 6 — Do Not Judge the First Class Too Quickly

First classes are an orientation, not a performance. What you see from outside may look like standing still, watching other children, or half-participating in movements. That is completely normal. Your child is processing an entirely new environment, a new instructor, new peers, and new physical expectations all at once.

The question to ask after a first class is not “Did they do everything perfectly?” It is “Did they want to come back?” That is the only meaningful measure on day one.

Most children who are appropriately matched to their class and age level answer yes. If yours does not, speak to the instructor before drawing conclusions — there are usually simple adjustments that make a significant difference.

Step 7 — Use the Free Trial Class at J’Danse

If you have not yet committed to a full season and your child’s first class is a trial, know that J’Danse Studio’s free trial is exactly that — a full class, with the regular instructor, in the regular class environment, with no obligation. It is not a watered-down introduction. It is the real experience.

This is worth noting because not every studio in Scarborough offers this. Legacy of Dance Academy, for example, does not offer free trials. At J’Danse, the free trial has been part of how we welcome new families since 2010. We offer it because we are confident in what happens inside the class — and because we believe you and your child should experience it before deciding.
